About the Eureka Company

Eureka vacuums make home cleaning easier, and have been doing just that since the company’s founding in 1909 by Fred Wardell. Wardell’s business mission was to sell the vacuum cleaners directly to housewives – the decision makers on purchasing home cleanliness and health products. Through using door-to-door salesmen first regionally then nationally, Eureka was able to produce 2,000 vacuum cleaners per year by 1919.
With 3,000 salesmen around the nation, Eureka vacuums and the Eureka Company became a part of the American lifestyle. Eureka also began selling their vacuums through retailers, using their own salesmen in each store. However, during the Great Depression in the late 1920s and early 1930s, Eureka moved away from utilizing both door-to-door and retail salesmen, as the commission for salesmen was too high. Because of this, Eureka began selling their vacuums directly to retail stores, virtually eliminating the salesmen and cutting costs. In 1960, The Eureka Company merged with National Union Electric to form the Eureka-Williams Company.
The new company then began making an array of products such as oil burners and desks. In 1974 The Eureka Company was bought out by Electrolux, based out of Sweden, which still owns the company today. By making strategic business decisions, Eureka was able to pave its way into the future of vacuums. Expanding its product lines to include carpet cleaners, wet vacuums and industrial products, Eureka was able to reach untargeted customer bases and widen their growth as a top competitor in the vacuum world. Due to the popularity of upright vacuums and the invention of handheld vacuum accessories, Eureka was able to secure a spot in the vacuum market for decades to come.
Today, the Eureka Company sells its products to families and businesses through online outlets, official Eureka stores, and third-party retailers.
